National Healthcare Decision Day

    4/11/2016
Mercy’s Critical Care Unit (CCU) is supporting the National Healthcare Decisions Day for the fifth year in a row.  National Healthcare Decisions Day is an annual day of awareness in April that serves as a reminder of how important it is to make your own educated healthcare decisions.  National Healthcare Decisions Day focuses on the importance of expressing your personal wishes for care – no matter what they may be.  This can be easily accomplished with the completion of an advance directive.

An advance directive is a written document that will serve as the guide for your decisions in the event you cannot make them yourself.  It often serves as a comfort to a family in a time of stress that the patient’s wishes are understood.

“I have spent 35 years as a nurse and have seen firsthand the importance of an advance directive or power of attorney,” explains Carlene Stevens, RN, Clinical Nurse Leader of Mercy’s CCU.  “It is my responsibility as a nurse to make sure I am honoring the wishes, values and beliefs of my patients and an advance directive ensures that.”

Please consider visiting Mercy Hospital on State Street in Portland on April 16 in recognition of National Healthcare Decisions Day.  Members from the CCU will be on hand passing out documentation and answering questions.  Over the past four events, hundreds of advance directives have been secured by members of the community.  It’s time to have the conversation with your loved ones so your wishes are heard.
