Mercy welcomes new medical director for maternal and women’s health

Dr. Anne Marie Van Hengel has joined Mercy Hospital as the medical director of The Birthplace and chief of obstetrics and gynecology. While Dr. Van Hengel will continue to practice medicine at InterMed, she will provide administrative leadership to Mercy’s maternal and women’s health practices.

“Mercy has a strong tradition of excellence in maternal and women’s health, and we’re pleased that Dr. Van Hengel will help us build on that work,” said Charlie Therrien, president of Mercy Hospital. “She has a wealth of experience, knows our organization well, and her shared commitment to delivering the best patient experience possible aligns perfectly with Mercy’s mission.”

Dr. Van Hengel received her undergraduate education from Brown University before attending the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Maine Medical Center, and she was the co-chair of maternal and child health at Mercy from 2005 to 2011. Dr. Van Hegel is board certified in OB/GYN and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She has also held teaching positions at the University of Vermont and Tufts University School of Medicine.
